Intensive care is an important link in the treatment chain for patients requiring specialist care. The department continuously monitors surgical patients who have undergone major complex procedures, after which they recuperate in the surgical wards. Patients from the medical wards may also be transferred to the intensive care department if they can no longer be treated or monitored in a medical ward in complete safety.

The department has 12 beds: eight of these are assigned to the intensive care unit (ICU) and four to the intermediate care unit (IMC). Intensive care is an extremely efficient and responsive department that employs highly qualified staff and state-of-the-art technology to continuously monitor all vital body functions. It also has a rapid intervention capability, and complex treatments can be carried out on the spot in the ICU. The ICU at Claraspital has been officially certified by the Swiss Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SSICM).

Ensuring interdisciplinarity with other specialists is an important concern. The responsible chief consultant is consulted about any changes in treatment strategy. Furthermore, patients who require intensive care can develop specific needs that go beyond those of their original disease. The responsible doctor in intensive care always consults the relevant specialist in such cases.
