Focus of therapy

The three most important types of therapy in oncology are surgery, systemic therapy and radiotherapy. The greatest progress in oncology has been made in the past 20 years by combining the different forms of treatment. These multimodal therapy concepts have significantly improved the cure rates for many types of tumour.

Currently about 60% of all patients with malignant tumours undergo radiotherapy. Alongside surgery, radiotherapy is the most effective form of local therapy. This applies not only to malignant but also to benign disorders. Elderly patients, in particular, derive enormous benefit from radiotherapy for degenerative disorders of the musculoskeletal system. This therapy has no substantial side effects and, depending on the indication, achieves good to very good pain reduction in up to 80% of cases.

  • Gastrointestinal tumours (cancer of the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, colon, biliary tract and gall bladder and rectum)
  • Gynaecological tumours (cancer of the breast, uterus, cervix and vagina)
  • Lung cancer
  • Brain tumours (malignant and benign tumours: astrocytomas, glioblastomas, meningeomas, brain metastases, pituitary adenomas)
  • Urogenital tumours (cancer of the prostate and bladder)
  • Head and neck tumours (preservation of the organ in laryngeal cancer, malignant tumours of the oral cavity and throat, tumours of the base of the skull)
  • Tumours of the lymphatic system (Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma)
  • Multimodal therapies: the optimum combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy
  • Palliative radiation to achieve rapid relief from pain or symptoms (e.g. for bone metastases)
  • Radiation to relieve pain in arthritic joint disorders (hands, elbows, shoulders, hips and knees) and disorders of the tendons and tendon insertions (tennis and golf elbow, heel spurs, shoulder problems)
