Symptoms
As the various hormones have very different functions, malfunctions of the endocrine glands lead to very different symptoms and clinical pictures, e.g. reduced performance, high blood pressure, weight gain and weight loss, osteoporosis or sexual disorders.
Causes
Common causes of glandular dysfunction are inflammation and benign or malignant tumours.
Diagnosis
It is important to think about these diseases at an early stage. They can be diagnosed quickly by an endocrinologist using blood tests, ultrasound and X-rays.
Possible treatments
Treatment is usually carried out with medication. In the case of hypofunction, hormone replacement is usually carried out in the form of tablets or injections.
Hyperthyroidism often affects the thyroid gland, which can then be treated with medication, radioactive drugs (radioiodine therapy) or surgery. Planning takes place in a joint board of all disciplines.
The planning of radioiodine therapy is carried out by our nuclear medicine department.
Specialised surgical treatment may be necessary for benign and malignant tumours of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands and hyperthyroidism.
The endocrine surgery team at Clarunis - University Abdominal Centre Basel has many years of experience and expertise in the field of thyroid and parathyroid surgery. This enables us to carry out complex procedures, e.g. for advanced tumours. A high quality of treatment and a high level of patient satisfaction are important to us. We are a member of Eurocrine®, a European quality register for the documentation of endocrine surgery operations and their results. Complex cases are also presented and discussed at the weekly internal thyroid board.
