A bone density measurement (osteodensitometry) using DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is carried out to clarify osteoporosis (bone loss).

The endocrinology department with nutrition centre provides advice on the prevention of osteoporosis, examinations on the causes and stage of the disease and, in collaboration with the physiotherapy department, drug and non-drug treatment.

The basis of prophylaxis/treatment is an adequate supply of calcium and vitamin D3, which is provided by food and sometimes also by supplements.

Bisphopshonate or denosumab, which prevent bone resorption, can be used for drug therapy.

In special cases, substances that build up the bone are also used, e.g. teriparatide or romosozumab.

The choice of therapy is based on the medical history, laboratory values and bone density measurement. Before starting treatment, detailed information on the effects and side effects is necessary.
