Nutritional medicine treats diseases in which there is an imbalance between nutrient requirements and nutrient supply. These can be individual nutrients, but are usually generalised disorders of the nutrient supply. Classic clinical pictures are obesity and its consequences on the one hand and malnutrition on the other.

While the Claraspital usually provides nutritional treatment for overweight patients on an outpatient basis with nutritional counselling and medication, and only surgical treatment requires inpatient treatment, malnutrition is an important issue in inpatient medicine. Many patients are admitted to hospital in a poor nutritional state, and examinations and operations can jeopardise their nutritional status during their inpatient stay.

  • Screening on admission: weight, amount eaten, appetite, stress factors
  • Involvement of nutritional counselling and nutritional medicine if malnutrition is imminent
  • Prescription of specific diet
  • Prescription of supplementary food
  • Insertion of a gastric tube or a tube for feeding via the vein
