Symptoms
Bleeding disorders with prolonged and heavier periods and intermenstrual bleeding are typical symptoms of fibroids. However, fibroids can also cause pressure problems on the bladder and bowel or even pain. They can also be the cause of an unfulfilled desire to have children.
Causes
Myomas develop from muscle cells. The location and size of fibroids can vary greatly.
Diagnosis
Myomas are usually diagnosed during a gynaecological examination using ultrasound.
Possible treatments
As long as fibroids do not cause any symptoms, treatment is not necessary in most cases. Different therapeutic approaches are used depending on the type and extent of the symptoms as well as the location and size of the fibroid.
If an operation is unavoidable, the fibroid is removed by uteroscopy, laparoscopy (possibly using a robot-assisted laparoscopy) or abdominal incision, leaving the uterus intact, depending on its location and size. Removal of the uterus may be a suitable solution if the desire to have children has been realised. This can be performed from the vagina, by laparoscopy (possibly by means of a robot-assisted laparoscopy) and, in rare cases, by abdominal incision. In selected cases, myoma embolisation is an alternative to surgery.
