Bronchoscopy / endoscopy of the airways

The examination serves to clarify lung diseases, for example infections including TB, lung tumours and diseases of the lung framework.

Bronchoscopy, an examination of the airways, allows a direct view of the larynx, trachea and bronchi. It isused to diagnose lung diseases, for example infections including TB, lung tumours and diseases of the lung framework. The examination is performed using a thin, flexible instrument, the bronchoscope, which is inserted through the nose or mouth.

Course of treatment

Depending on the suspected illness, cell and tissue samples can be taken during bronchoscopy, as well as material for testing for infectious agents. This examination can be carried out on an outpatient or inpatient basis, under local anaesthetic and, if desired, with a short-acting sedative.
We use rigid bronchoscopy under general anaesthetic to remove foreign bodies that have been swallowed or to open narrowed bronchi. This technique also allows the use of lasers and the insertion of internal splints (stents).
