Ultrasound is an imaging procedure without the use of X-rays. High-frequency sound waves are emitted via the ultrasound probe, which is placed on the skin with a small amount of gel. These are reflected by the organs and boundary structures. The ultrasound image is calculated from these signals. By moving the ultrasound probe, the organs can be examined in their entirety.

Typical ultrasound examinations are

  • Ultrasound of the upper and lower abdomen
  • Ultrasound of the breast
  • Ultrasound of the groin
  • Ultrasound of the abdominal wall
  • Ultrasound of the shoulder joint
  • Ultrasound of the soft tissues

Doppler sonography is a special procedure for clarifying and assessing the blood vessels, the vessel wall and the blood flow. It can be used to visualise organ perfusion, vascular constrictions or occlusions (thromboses).

Typical Doppler sonography examinations are

  • Doppler sonography of the thyroid gland
  • Doppler sonography of the neck vessels
  • Doppler sonography of the peripheral veins (arms, legs)
