Ligation / vasovasostomy

A vasectomy, also known as a vasectomy, is a surgical procedure in which the vasa deferentia are severed.

The operation leads to male sterility and is used for contraception. Hormone production in the testicles is preserved and the erectile function of the penis is not affected. If you are already a father, we perform the procedure from the age of 35. If you do not yet have children, we will not perform a vasectomy before the age of 40.

Course of treatment

As the sperm that continue to be produced in the testicles can no longer be discharged after the vas deferens has been severed, they are broken down (reabsorbed) by the body. The ejaculate of a sterilised man no longer contains any sperm, but is otherwise largely unchanged in terms of volume, appearance, smell and taste.

The vasectomy procedure
The operation is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic and takes about 30 minutes. The doctor exposes the vas deferens with two small incisions on the scrotum (approx. 1 cm each), removes a piece of the vas deferens approx. 1 cm long and scleroses and knots the incisions. The skin wounds are then closed with one or two self-dissolving sutures.

After the vasectomy
The procedure should be followed by a two-day rest period. Physical exertion and sport should be avoided for a period of 7-10 days. After approx. 4 months, a microscopic semen analysis is carried out in the andrology laboratory. Infertility is only guaranteed when no more sperm can be detected in the seminal fluid. In rare cases, this can take several months.

Risks of the procedure
Bruising, swelling or wound healing disorders occur very rarely. In rare cases (< 0.1%), spontaneous recanalisation can lead to the undesired renewed patency of the vas deferens, even if the procedure is performed technically flawlessly.

The costs
The costs of the procedure are not usually covered by health insurance. Please enquire at our office (telephone 061 685 8523) about the costs for the preliminary consultation, the operation and the follow-up examination.
