Reverse ligation / vasovasostomy

Due to social changes with an increasing divorce rate and the corresponding increase in second or even third partnerships, there is a growing need to undo the ligation.

Today, it is assumed that 2-10% of men who have had a vasovasostomy wish to restore the continuity of the vas deferens. The definitive decision in favour of a vasovasostomy is actually made by around 3.5% of men who have had a vasovasostomy.

Course of treatment

Today, vasectomy is one of the safest and most effective methods of contraception. Around 5% of all married couples of reproductive age opt for a vasectomy as their contraceptive method of choice.

The reversal of male sterilisation (after ligation) is performed using magnifying glasses and the finest suture material. The gold standard today is microsurgical two-layer vasovasostomy. Two small incisions are made in the scrotum to expose the vas deferens. With the help of magnifying glasses or a surgical microscope, the vas deferens stumps are reattached using the finest suture material (suture thickness approx. 0.03 mm).

The operation takes two to three hours and is performed under spinal anaesthesia or general anaesthesia, depending on the patient's wishes. The procedure is usually performed on a day surgery basis. You can shower again two days after the operation. Office work can be resumed around three days later. We recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity and sexual intercourse for about four weeks. The stitches used to close the skin on the scrotum will dissolve on their own after about 14 days. After the operation, microscopic checks of the seminal fluid should be carried out every three months until sperm is detected.

Pregnancy rates after vasovasostomy are higher than after artificial insemination (intracytoplasmic sperm injection - ICSI) and are all the better the shorter the interval since the ligation. On average, around 50-70% of couples are able to achieve a pregnancy.
Similar to vasectomy, the costs of vasovasostomy are not covered by health insurance and amount to between CHF 6,000 and 7,000 at the Claraspital.
