Cutting-edge medicine in the region: HSM service contracts for the Claraspital

26 September 2023
From 2024, only 15 hospitals in Switzerland will be authorised to remove the rectum for bowel cancer and only 21 will be allowed to perform complex weight loss operations such as gastric bypass. The Claraspital Basel has once again been awarded the new service contracts for complex bariatric surgery and deep rectal resection in adults.

This means that Clarunis - University Abdominal Centre Basel can continue to perform all complex, highly specialised abdominal surgery procedures at the two parent hospitals - four of them at the Claraspital. Clarunis is thus consolidating highly specialised abdominal medicine in north-western Switzerland.

New award of service contracts in the outstanding sub-areas
In 2019, the Swiss decision-making body for highly specialised medicine (HSM) awarded the service contracts for complex, highly specialised visceral surgery. The Claraspital Basel and the University Hospital Basel, Clarunis sites, were awarded the service contracts in the sub-areas of oesophageal, pancreatic and liver resection for a period of six years.

There was also an initial allocation decision in the sub-areas of deep rectal resection in adults and complex bariatric surgery, although experts were of the opinion that too many hospitals were listed. The two sub-areas were then returned to the HSM expert body for reconsideration with the instruction to achieve greater concentration.

Claraspital receives both newly awarded service contracts
On the recommendation of the specialist body and following a broad consultation, the Swiss decision-making body for highly specialised medicine awarded the service mandate for rectal removals in June 2023. Only 15 of the 37 hospitals that applied have now been awarded a service mandate for rectal removal for colorectal cancer for the next six years. The service contracts for complex bariatric surgery (complex operations to reduce weight) were also awarded. In this area, 21 out of 33 hospitals that applied were awarded the service mandate.

Decision of the Conference of Cantonal Directors of Public Health (GDK)

Requirements of the HSM decision-making body exceeded
The Claraspital has once again been awarded both HSM service contracts. Together with Clarunis, the Claraspital exceeds the stricter, specific requirements of the HSM decision-making body with regard to structural and process quality, participation in teaching, further education and research, the obligation to keep a register and other quality criteria.
